Improved Policing

UDTJ has been proactive in getting change at the local level for disenfranchised communities. Since our founding we have educated the public on the implementation of community programs, police accountability measures, and quality of life improvements for communities of color. Many structural problems continue to plague our communities and the surrounding municipalities and regardless of political party we seek the improvement and equality in policing, education, and amenities.

Some recent Public Policy changes implemented have included…

  • The purchase of body cameras for the largest police department in Delaware County.

  • Advocating for the banning of the use of tear gas and pepper spray by police officers.

  • Advocating for the reallocation of funding towards community programs and sanitation instead of militarize policing.

  • Combating microaggression and culture of racism in institutions such as schools, government, and policing.

  • Pushing for the creation of a community advisory board to provide oversight of the Upper Darby Police Department.

  • Advocating for the use of non-lethal tactics by police officers.

  • Encouraging the integration of social workers in the Police Officer response to mental health related calls.

  • Providing accountability of the Upper Darby Police Department as a watchdog.

The aforementioned represent the beginning of our public policy initiatives and more will be added as we go forward.

As of December, Upper Darby Township has announced it will be receiving $75,000.00 in grant money to assist in the purchasing of body camera for the UDPD.
