Volunteer at the Center

U.D.T.J. aims to seek to end systemic inequalities in Upper Darby, Delaware County, and beyond through community events, services, and programs. Volunteers make a vital contribution to our aims. We recognize the added value that volunteers bring to our organization and those who use our services.

As our county’s first BIPOC, LGBTQQIA+, and youth center we would not be able to operate without the tireless work of our volunteers. It takes a community to build our community from the ground up and look after each other.

FAQs

Volunteering at a youth, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), and LGBTQQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and other identities) community center is a commendable endeavor. Here are some practical things you should know before volunteering in such a setting:

  • A: Volunteer shifts vary but we typically have two 4-hour shifts a day from 10 AM - 2 PM and 2 PM - 6 PM. Volunteers can work with our Volunteer Coordinator to determine their schedule although we recommend volunteers pick at least two shifts a week.

  • A: Volunteer roles vary however the main categories include but are not limited to; running the front desk, helping with programming or special events, publicity and media, fundraising, and outreach.

  • When volunteers are sick or have holidays or other commitments which mean that they cannot attend their normal volunteer shift, they should update their main contact preferably 24 hours in advance to ensure that we can arrange alternative coverage. If volunteers require a longer break from their volunteering, they should discuss this with their main contact. We will try to be as flexible as possible to accommodate the needs of volunteers because without you we could not operate!

  • A: To become a volunteer, all you need to do is complete the volunteer form below! After you submit your form, we will reach out to you within 5 business days. Afterwards, we will schedule a time for you to come into the office for an interview. If selected, there will be an introduction to volunteering which will involve an overview of their role, cultural competency, and relevant policies and procedures. Volunteers will have regular support and supervision meetings with the Volunteer Coordinator to identify areas for development, or to discuss any issues.

  • A: Yes! However you will still need to connect with your school advisor to ensure we are able to meet all requirements.
